Chapter Sixteen

Morgan

Before Ma stepped out, Ann Marie stood. She swayed on her feet, and I was on mine in a flash, supporting her with an arm around her waist.

Dustin, all humor gone, ran to her other side.

“Come sit, you’ve turned white,” I said and guided her to the lounge. Her steps shaky at best.

“I’m okay,” she said, but her grip on my bicep weakened. I lifted her. Pressed her against my chest. And none too soon. She went limp and her eyes rolled to the back of her head.

“Dustin, call nine-one-one,” I screamed, grabbing my family’s attention.

She lay motionless in my arms as Susan ran toward us. I put her on the lounge, kneeled beside her, and rubbed her neck. My hand shook. I dropped it and took her delicate one in my larger calloused one.

Dustin recited my parent’s address to someone on the phone, but I tuned out the rest, my focus on Ann Marie.

Sweat dampened my skin, and I concentrated on loosening my tensed muscles. Ma handed me a wet towel. I placed it on Ann Marie’s forehead and paid close attention to her closed eyelids for any signs of stirring.

Jesse appeared beside me. His fingers pressed to her wrist, and his gaze locked on his watch.

“Mom, bring me something with a potent smell, please,” he said. His calmness did nothing to alleviate the spike of adrenaline coursing through me. He sensed my unease and spoke to me without moving his attention away from Ann Marie. “If you’re going to lose it, go do it somewhere else.”

“I’m fine. Just focus on her.”

“I am. Morgan, take a breath.”

I rocked on my knees. “Where’s Ma? What’s taking her so long?”

“She’ll be back in a minute.”

True to his word, within seconds her arm extended over us, handing him a bottle of cologne. She patted my shoulder and moved away. Jesse popped the top and swiped it below her nose. Her eyes fluttered.

“Keep doing that.” My voice pitched high.

“Susan, see to Morgan. Pax, take his place,” Jesse said.

Small yet strong fingers gripped my biceps. “Come on, Morgan. Leave Jesse and Pax to tend to her.”

Never would she have the strength to pull me away, but I relented. My heart wanted to stay by Ann Marie’s side, but my mind won. I was useless to her. It wasn’t a feeling I liked. It brought me back to that day in the car, as I screamed for my uncle to wake up.

“Shit.” Big hands pushed my head forward and supported me at the torso. “Breathe, man. Come on, just like that,” Pax said in my ear. “This is nothing like the past. Don’t you dare pass out on me. Dustin and Parker will never let you live it down.”

I followed his instructions, regulated my breath, averted the queasiness and threat of faint, and straightened. Parker handed me a bottle of water, and I chugged it down. The cool liquid swirling down my throat grounded me into reality. I acknowledged Pax, and he patted my shoulder, nodded at Parker, and returned to Ann Marie.
